Afterhue vs Alpenglow: a keepsake or a forecasting toolkit

By · Updated · 2 min read

Alpenglow is a long-running sunrise and sunset forecaster with alarms, widgets, an AR sun path and Apple Watch support. Afterhue gives tonight one Glow Score with plain reasons and turns each sunset you photograph into a numbered color chip. Alpenglow does more on forecasts and devices.

What is the main difference?

Alpenglow describes itself as telling you "when it's worth going outside" with quality forecasts, times, alarms and a sun direction map. Afterhue asks the same question but answers with a single score and short reasons, then adds a place to keep the sunsets you catch.

Competitor facts were checked on October 10, 2026 against the US App Store listings. Apps change, so verify before you commit. Afterhue is made by the publisher of this site, is in development and is not on the App Store yet, so it has no rating and no listed price.

What does Alpenglow do better?

It covers far more ground. The listing names an AR sun path, a sun direction map, Live Activities, interactive widgets, StandBy, Apple Watch complications and apps on Mac, Apple TV and Vision Pro, in 34 languages. It has been on the App Store since 2016 and was updated on September 20, 2026.

What does Afterhue do better?

It explains and it remembers. Every score comes with reasons such as high-cloud share or rain clearing before sunset, labeled as an estimate. A free repeating golden-hour reminder needs no subscription. Each sunset you catch becomes a Hue Chip with five colors, and you can send a Sky Call to a friend with no account.

Who should pick which?

  • Choose Alpenglow if you want Watch complications, widgets and a long track record.
  • Choose Afterhue if you want a score that tells you why and a personal log of your sunsets.
  • Try both for a week. Alpenglow is a free download, and Afterhue arrives after release.
