Afterhue vs Helio: reasons and a keepsake, or a community map

By · Updated · 3 min read

Helio rates every sunrise and sunset with a machine-learning model and adds community reports on a map plus a list of top predicted spots. Afterhue gives tonight one Glow Score with plain reasons and turns each sunset you photograph into a numbered color chip. Helio is built around the crowd, Afterhue around you.

What is the main difference?

Both apps answer the question of whether tonight is worth stepping out for. Helio answers it with a model score and with what other people near you report. Afterhue answers it with a single Glow Score, up to three reasons in words and an honest label that it is an estimate, and then gives you a place to keep the sunsets you catch.

Competitor facts here come from the US App Store listing for Helio: Sunset Forecast, checked on October 10, 2026, and describe the app as of October 2026. Apps change, so verify before you decide. Afterhue is made by the publisher of this site, is in development and is not on the App Store yet, so it has no rating and no listed price.

What does Helio do better?

It has other people. Its listing describes Community Reports that show real sky conditions near you on a map, and Top Predicted Spots, which lists the places worldwide where the model expects a genuinely great sky tonight. If you travel or like to chase a standout sky, that discovery layer is something Afterhue does not attempt. Helio has also been on the App Store since 2020 and was updated on June 2, 2026, so it has a track record that a new app lacks.

It also includes built-in weather, so you can see the conditions that shape the sky before you head out.

What does Afterhue do better?

It explains itself and it remembers. Each Glow Score comes with reasons such as High clouds 32% or Clear to the west, and a Why sheet that writes each factor out as a sentence. You can disagree with a chip and decide for yourself. A free golden-hour reminder repeats on the days you choose, with no subscription.

Then the keepsake: every sunset you photograph becomes a Hue Chip with five colors, a name and a number, and a year of them becomes a Sky Strip. Your ratings also tune the score for your own sky after three entries in the same area.

How do the two handle accuracy?

Neither can promise a sunset. Helio's listing says it uses real weather and an ML model, and it lets people rate their own sky so the community helps call the next one. Afterhue reads cloud layers, humidity, visibility and rain chances from Apple WeatherKit for your place and for a second point about 150 km toward the setting sun, then states plainly that smoke, dust, sea fog and local terrain can surprise it. Read how forecasts work and where they fail in sunset quality forecast.

Who should pick which?

The choice depends on whether you want a map or a memory.

  • Choose Helio if you want to see what people nearby report, or to find the best predicted skies around the world.
  • Choose Afterhue if you want reasons in plain words, a reminder that follows the sun and a personal log of the sunsets you catch.
  • Use both for a week. Helio is a free download, and Afterhue arrives after release.

Can I use them together?

Yes. They do different jobs. Use a community map to find an interesting evening, then use a score with reasons to decide how far to go. A fuller overview of the field, including Alpenglow, Sunsethue and Golden Hour, is in our roundup of the best sunset forecast apps for iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Afterhue better than Helio?

They solve different problems. Helio centers on community reports and top predicted spots, while Afterhue gives a score with reasons and a personal color log. Neither is better for everyone.

Does Afterhue have community reports or a map?

No. Afterhue has Sky Calls that you send to friends and a personal log, but no public map of other users' reports.

Is Helio free?

Its listing says it is free to download, with Helio Premium for extended, longer-range forecasts. Check the listing for current terms.

Does Helio explain its scores?

Its listing describes quality scores on a clear scale. It does not describe reason chips like those in Afterhue.

Which one works offline?

Afterhue computes sun times on the phone, so those work offline, while the score needs a forecast. Helio's listing does not describe offline behavior.
